Schmidt Camera Photography

Updated 11/18/05

With a dark sky and a steady mounting, the schmidt camera is by far the best overall astrograph for a variety of skyshooting. I use two such instruments, a Celestron 8 inch f/1.5 and 5.5 inch f/1.65. Both use roll film holders made from paper clips and can accept filters for tricolor work of a standard 48mm size that have been modified with Wratten filters inside them. Exposure times range from 2 to 50 minutes depending on the film and filter combination employed. All of the images are digitally scanned with a slide scanner and combined with Picture Window and Adobe Photoshop for the final composite. Successful films have included hypered 2415, Pro400PPF, PJ400, E200 and Elite 100.

This is my 8 inch schmidt camera up at the new observatory in Happy Jack Arizona. It is mounted on a home made mounting, with a Byers 10 inch Starmaster Drive.
