Alpha Phoenicis
Low on the southern
horizon in the fall, the brightest star in the constellation
of Phoenix is called Ankaa. Bright and easy to find with the
naked eyes, this 2.4th magnitude K0 star appears very orange
in binoculars. 15x larger than our Sun, this giant type star
is also a spectroscopic binary with the companion having a 10.5
year orbit. It lies 85 light years from the Earth.
