This spectacular
field near the center of our galaxy features the area around
the stinger of Scorpius at center right, M6 at the top, and an
equal amount of sky below the tail. There are so many fine details
in this image, I encourage you to go get your Tirion Atlas, and
spend some time just driving around in this immense field. While
the page sized 800 wide image is fine for a quick look, the two
largest images show more and more resolution and smaller objects.
We start at the
top of this image, with the Butterfly cluster M6 at center top.
To its right is the huge emission nebula LBN1117 with Sharpless
2-13 to its upper right corner. The large void to M6 left is
Barnard 278. The blazing star cloud above and left of center
is around M7, a large and splashy cluster with dozens of planetary
nebula surrounding and inside of it. What is the bright object
just below the star cloud that is orange in color? Thats a prime
target for skyshooters, NGC6441 a 7th mag globular right next
to the bright orange star G Scorpii. Down below is a very dense
field of faint stars with the dark streak shaped dark nebula
being Barnard 58.
Processing: A gigantic
project, taking every computer resource I had to complete. Six
deep schmidt negatives at sky fog limit were scanned at 16 bits
and maximum 2700 dpi resolution. The files were registered in
PixInsight, combined in pairs using multiplication of negatives,
then combined in PS CS to form the montage.
