3D Printing Projects: Design, Printing, Implementation 1.25" Telescope Eyepiece Cap Project Updated 1/1/19

 This is a nice small test item to check the tolerances of the printer, and end up with a very handy and useful part when finished. Many of the small plastic caps which are usually included with a telescope occular when you buy it get separated and lost. This is the replacement, and can be printed up as needed. Suprisingly, the PLA used did very well on the compression fit and keeps the dust and moisture out.

 Rendered here in Solid Works as a semi transparent cap, you can easily see the four ridges that have been added. The tube of the eypeiece rides on these and forces them outward to give a good springy fit. I used a precision dial caliper to measure a cap from Televue Optical that came with our Nagler eyepieces and the numbers worked well here even though the PLA is more rigid than polyethelene.

 The cap on the left is the 3D printed cap, and on the right is the original Televue cap I modeled my drawing after. I now have caps for ALL my eyepieces!
 Shown here is the PLA cap fitting perfectly on a Televue Plossl occular.
